September is Rotary’s Basic Education and Literacy Month, a time to recognize one of the most powerful tools for long-term change. At the Guatemala Literacy Project (GLP), education and literacy aren’t just programs: they’re the heart of everything we do to help Guatemalan children break the cycle of poverty.
Through your support, GLP empowers students across Guatemala to change their futures by following three proven pathways:
Reading: Building a Strong Foundation
In a country where 1 in 3 Indigenous Guatemalans cannot read or write, the Spark Reading Program is making a measurable difference. Students in GLP-supported classrooms are learning twice as much as those in traditional schools.
We also partner with schools to create self-sustaining textbook programs in communities where up to 90% of classrooms lack books—ensuring students can learn with the materials they need, year after year.
Technology: Equipping Students for the Future
Access to technology is rare in rural Guatemala, but it’s critical for success in today’s world. That’s why GLP’s Computer Centers Program gives students hands-on digital skills training that opens doors to further education and employment.
As a result, 95% of GLP Technology Program graduates go on to continue their studies or find a job.
Graduation: Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders
Only 10% of rural Guatemalan students graduate from high school. Through GLP’s Rise Youth Development Program, promising students receive scholarships, mentorship, and holistic support to help them stay in school and reach their potential.
In regions where four out of five Indigenous people live in poverty, an incredible 80% of Rise graduates go on to find employment or pursue higher education.
Why It Matters
Literacy is more than just reading. It’s a gateway to independence, opportunity, and a better life.

Celebrating a Milestone Together
We are thrilled to share that Global Grant 2124415 has officially closed! This grant has been four years in the making, and we are deeply grateful to the Rotary Clubs of Yorba Linda Sunrise, CA and La Asunción, Guatemala, and especially to the primary contacts who dedicated so much time and energy to seeing it through. Because of their commitment, countless children and teachers now have access to the resources they need to thrive. This grant was longer than most, making its successful closure an even bigger achievement. Huge congratulations and thanks to everyone who contributed to this incredible journey!
